Project: Dementia & Older Persons Day Centre

Luci Living Design worked with clients Age UK on the complete re design and refurbishment of their Day Services at St Katherine’s Day Centre in Tameside. The aim to create a welcoming, practical, value for money and user-friendly scheme in particular for older persons with dementia. The existing building, interior and furnishings were very tired and dated and so we set out to transform it into a bright, cosy, attractive space whilst encompassing best practices and research-based principles in designing for old age and dementia. The project involved us arranging building works and re modelling the space, interior designs for each area and room, branding, colour scheme, decorating, flooring, fit -out, new furniture, curtains, voiles, artwork, notice and activities boards, dementia suitable way finding signage, a reminiscence room, modern LED lighting panels throughout, feature lighting, products and accessories. Luci Living Design also spoke at the launch of the building, provided staff training and presented at Age UK’s annual conference on matters relating to dementia design and the environment.

“The results of the upgrade to our Independent Living Centre has surpassed all my expectations. We used to segregate people in terms of diagnosis or condition or even funding allocation. Now everyone is integrated, doing things they enjoy, learning new skills, participating in art, exercise and many other activities. I have observed that our service users and staff are much more relaxed and happy and want to participate with their friends. We have seen a significant rise in interest and referrals to our centre and individuals and families are increasingly approaching us for help and support”
